Doctor Weston talks essential oils today. Who doesn’t know someone who is an expert in essential oils and is quick to mention one for every complaint you could ever have? Headache, pain, flu, insomnia, indigestion, and more, if you have a problem, they have an oil. What are essential oils? They are the volatile oils of plants that are released through steam distillation or expression. They are fragrant and reactive. Do essential oils really help? That’s a hard question to answer. Essential oils have a long history of use. If there was absolutely no substance to them and their benefits, they probably would have gone the way of bloodletting. Studies are difficult to conduct as people are not nose-blind to the powerful fragrances, destroying any chance for double-blind trials to eliminate the placebo effect. They also aren’t patented or FDA controlled, so there isn’t a ton of money going into studies either. Studies that have been conducted have mixed results that often contradict one another. Doctor Weston feels they are worth exploring and shares some of his favorites, including lavender, clove, peppermint, rose, lemon balm, eucalyptus, tea tree, and orange peel. These tout the benefits of antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, pain-killing, anxiety dampening, antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, decongestion, anti-itch, and even breathe freshening properties. They speak to the limbic system, the emotional center of the brain, and can affect mood, health, and anxiety levels fairly rapidly. The health improvements may be anecdotal, but you be the judge. See what works for you.

“An essential oil is a concentrated hydrophobic liquid containing volatile aroma compounds from plants. Essential oils are also known as volatile oils, ethereal oils, aetherolea, or simply as the “oil of” the plant from which they were extracted, such as oil of clove. An oil is “essential” in the sense that it contains the “essence of” the plant’s fragrance—the characteristic fragrance of the plant from which it is derived.[1] Essential oils do not form a distinctive category for any medical, pharmacological, or culinary purpose. They are not essential for health.”
