With a length of less than 1/150th of an inch, chiggers are barely visible to the naked eye. Technically, they are “arachnids,” in the same family as ticks and spiders.
Chiggers live in all parts of the world. They are most frequently found in – grassy fields, forests, gardens, parks, and in moist areas around rivers or lakes.
The easiest way to avoid this type of bites is by avoiding walking in bushes, long grass, or other areas where these bugs may be present.
Chigger bites commonly heal on their own within about ten days. Vigorously scrub the area with water and soap to remove the mites.
Itching is the primary symptom, and it is most intense 2 days after the initial bite. The itching can last for a few days, and it can take up to 14 days for the areas to return to normal appearance.
The itchy blisters are most common around the lower legs and waist, as these are the easiest for chiggers to reach.
Essential oils for chigger bites include – lavender essential oil, castor essential oil, and coconut essential oil. Other natural remedies for chigger bites include baking soda, ice, and aloe vera.
