Chamomile Essential Oil
Chamomile essential oil is extracted from the flowers of the Chamomile plant, which is very popular as a flowering plant. There are two types of Chamomile, the Roman Chamomile and the German Chamomile. Although the essential oils extracted from both varieties are quite similar in some medicinal properties, their composition is different and they do possess certain specific qualities that are worth noting.
Did You Know…thyme and chamomile essential oils can kill breast cancer cells? Recent studies suggest that essential oils are promising cancer remedies. Chinese researchers tested the antibacterial potency of 10 of the most popular essential oils, as well as their effect on 3 human cancer cell lines, which were Breast, Lung and Prostate Cancer Lines. Thyme and chamomile emerged as clear candidates for viable cancer cures.
The breast cancer cells were mostly destroyed with these oils, with chamomile killing up to 93% of them in vitro. Even more effective was thyme oil, which led to a 97% kill rate of the breast cancer cells. Though it is important to remember that this research was performed in vitro – meaning that the cells were studied outside their normal biological context – like in a petri dish.
Now let’s look at the specific qualities of both the Roman and German Chamomile. The Roman Chamomile oil is more calming and works better as a blood flow stimulant for menstruation, while the German Chamomile oil is a very powerful anti-inflammatory agent.
For anyone that is under stress, is going through a period of depression, loneliness, intense fear or is challenged by anxiety or post traumatic shock disorder, Roman Chamomile Essential Oil can help bring a sense of calm.
If you’ve ever enjoyed a cup of Chamomile tea, you are already familiar with the aroma and sense of calm that chamomile offers. The aroma and sedative effect of the undiluted Roman Chamomile Essential Oil, however, is much more fragrant and powerful.
Roman Chamomile is known to be especially helpful in combating insomnia.
Roman Chamomile Essential Oil is one of the few essential oils that most agree is especially safe to use, well diluted, with children. When diffused, it can help to calm irritable babies and soothe a toddler’s temper tantrums.
Whereas, German Chamomile Essential Oil is good for help in healing almost any injury, especially relating to muscles, tendons, or ligaments, German Chamomile is one of the most powerful oils available. Its anti-inflammatory and cooling action is a welcome relief for pain and unwanted heat. It is also an effective oil to use when looking to treat superficial inflammations such as rashes, insect bites, and burns.
German Chamomile is one of the gentler essential oils and is often used when treating children for injuries and stress relief.
A Few Words of Caution
There are no specific risks of using either of the oils that has been widely displayed, except that it should be avoided if someone has a direct allergy to chamomile or to any other members of the Ragweed family, to which Chamomile belongs.
